UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension
4-H Radish Growing Progam
The Sarasota County 4-H Office, which is part of the Cooperative Extension Service, is once again offering the "Radish Growing Contest" to elementary schools in our county. This activity is geared to work with your 3rd grade plant science program.
The purpose of this project is to introduce young people to vegetable gardening. To teach the basic skills of planting and caring for vegetable plants, help students learn how to report what they have learned, and receive recognition for their accomplishments.
Extension personnel will coordinate the program, provide instructions to teachers, supply radish seeds for each student and instructions on how to plant and grow radishes.
Each student who has successfully grown radishes would bring a "bunch" of eight back to school. The radishes then would be transported to the Sarasota County Fair to be judged. Students will receive a fair pass, a blue, red or white ribbon, and the TOP 3 RADISH GROWER’S of each school will be recognized with a medallion.
If your school is interested in participating in this "learn by doing" activity please complete a registration form and return it to our office. I look forward to working with you and your staff this 2009 –2010 school year!
